SNOM! The very word conjures to mind the excitement of our ancestors sleighing across the Teutonic plains! A time when Men were Men, Women were Women, and PBX systems were these expensive boxes that only highly trained and heavily bearded wizards, schooled in arcane and eldritch schools such as Nortel, 3CX, Avaya, could darest comprehend. Where was I going with this? Oh yes.

Just this morning, we received word that Snom, our favorite German VoIP manufacturer, has rolled out the their new iPBX, Snom One, which you can download and test for free in a demo version (limited to ten device registrations). We got it up and running from Download to Registered in about 15 minutes, but we'd like to point out a big tip to prevent a security concern.

Once it’s installed on your server, you are not prompted to change the password from the blank default. This means that anyone can get into your system and begin making calls to Mars, for which you’ll have to pay.

So, when you get the program up and running (see here), please, for the love of Pete, make certain to secure your PBX. Otherwise, Martian hackers will have their way with your device, and we’ll be forced to suspend your PSTN Gateway service. If weak passwords on extensions equals hacked box, what do you think no password on the admin console means? Secure your PBX and tip your support person!
